History of India can be \nstudied under political, cultural, religious or economic heads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Indian History Chronology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chronologically, Indian History can be classified into three periods \u2013 Ancient India, Medieval India and Modern India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ancient India (Pre-historic to AD 700)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"609\" height=\"700\" src=\"https:\/\/knowledgekart.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ancient-india.jpg\" alt=\"Ancient India MAp\" class=\"wp-image-967\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/knowledgekart.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/ancient-india.jpg 609w, https:\/\/knowledgekart.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/ancient-india-416x478.jpg 416w, https:\/\/knowledgekart.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/ancient-india-261x300.jpg 261w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 609px) 100vw, 609px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There were activities of proto-humans (<em>Homo erectus<\/em>) in the Indian subcontinent 20 lakh years (2 million years) ago, and of&nbsp;<em>Homo sapiens<\/em>&nbsp;since 70,000 BC. But they were gathers\/hunters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first&nbsp;inhabitants&nbsp;of Indian&nbsp;subcontinent&nbsp;might have been tribals \nlike Nagas (North-East), Santhals (East-India), Bhils (Central India), \nGonds (Central India), Todas (South India) etc. Most of them are \nspeakers of the Austric, pre-Dravidian languages, such as&nbsp;Munda and \nGondvi. Dravidians and Aryans are&nbsp;believed to be immigrants who came \nlater to the sub-continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ancient India can be studied under other heads like Paleolithic,  Mesolithic, Neolithic and Chalcolithic period \u2013 based on the type of  stone\/ metal tools people used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paleolithic Period (2 million BC \u2013 10,000 BC)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fire<\/li><li>Tools made up of lime stone<\/li><li>Ostrich Eggs<\/li><li>Important Paleolithic sites: Bhimbetka (M.P), Hunsgi, Kurnool Caves, Narmada Valley (Hathnora, M.P), Kaladgi Basin<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mesolithic Period (10,000 BC \u2013 8,000 BC)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Major Climatic Change happened<\/li><li>Domestication of animals ie Cattle rearing started<\/li><li>Microliths found at Brahmagiri (Mysore), Narmada, Vindya, Gujarat<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Neolithic Period (8000 BC \u2013 4,000 BC)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Agriculture Started<\/li><li>Wheel discovered<\/li><li>Inamgaon = An early village<\/li><li>Important Neolithic Sites : Burzahom(Kashmir), Gufkral(Kashmir), \nMehrgarh(Pakistan), Chirand(Bihar), Daojali Hading(Tripura\/Assam), \nKoldihwa(UP), Mahagara(UP), Hallur(AP), Paiyampalli(AP), Maski, Kodekal,\n Sangana Kaller, Utnur, Takkala Kota.<\/li><li>NB: Megalithic Sites: Brahmagiri, Adichanallur<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chalcolithic Period (4000 BC \u2013 1,500 BC)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Copper Age. Can be considered part of Bronze Age. (Bronze = Copper + Tin)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearias.com\/indus-valley-civilization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indus Valley Civilization<\/a> (BC 2700 \u2013 BC 1900).<\/li><li>Also cultures at Brahmagiri, Navada Toli (Narmada region), Mahishadal (W.Bengal), Chirand (Ganga region)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Iron Age (BC 1500 \u2013 BC 200)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Vedic Period (Arrival of Aryans ie. BC 1600 \u2013 BC&nbsp;600) \u2013 Nearly 1000 \nyears (Basic books of Hinduism, ie Vedas were composed, might have \nwritten down later.)<\/li><li>Jainism and Buddhism<\/li><li>Mahajanapadas \u2013 Major Civilization after Indus Valley- On banks of river Ganga<\/li><li>Magadha empire \u2013 Bimbisara of Haryanka Kula<\/li><li>Sisunga dynasty \u2013 Kalasoka (Kakavarnin)<\/li><li>Nanda empire \u2013 Mahapadma-nanda, Dhana-nanda<\/li><li>Persian- Greek: Alexander 327 BC<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mauryan Empire&nbsp;(321-185 BC)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearias.com\/ancient-india-maurya-post-maurya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Important rulers of Mauryan Empire<\/a>: Chandra Gupta Maurya, Bindusara, Asoka<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Post-Mauryan Kingdoms (Middle Kingdoms):<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sunga (181-71 BC), Kanva (71-27BC), Satavahanas (235-100BC), \nIndo-Greeks, Parthians (19-45AD), Sakas (90BC-150AD), Kushanas(78AD)<\/li><li>South Indian Kingdoms \u2013 Chola, Chera, Pandyas (BC 300)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gupta Kingdom (300AD \u2013 800AD):&nbsp;Classical Period<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearias.com\/ancient-india-gupta-post-gupta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Important ruler of Gupta Period<\/a>: Samudra Gupta (Indian Napoleon)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Post Guptas or Contemporary Guptas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Harshvardana,&nbsp;Vakatakas, Pallavas, Chalukyas.
